Introduction

Helambu is a small village in the Sindhupalchok district, home to the Hyolmo people. This short trek is perfect for people with limited time. Throughout the Helambu trek, you will get amazing views of the pristine Himalayas range. It is a remote farm with fascinating Buddhist cultures. It is situated about 80 km from Kathmandu. The Helambu region starts at Lauribina La Pass and descends to the Melamchi Valley. Famous for sweet apples and ancient Buddhist monasteries, Helambu is an ideal trekking destination.

This trek starts from Sundarijal near Kathmandu, and trekkers must walk for about 4 to 5 days to complete the entire trek. This trek is perfect for those looking to explore Nepal’s beauty in a short time. Whether you’re an experienced hiker or a beginner, you can definitely take on the Helambu trek. Let’s look into some of the highlights and get an overview of the Helambu trek.

Starting From Sundarijal

About an hour’s drive will take you to Sundarijal, a famous hiking destination for Kathmandu residents. Sundarijal (1980m) is blessed with small waterfalls and streams. This region lies in the Shivapuri National Park and has some of the best flora and fauna in the entire region.  Sundarijal has a small dam and hydroelectric station. From here, you’ll ascend north towards Chisapani. This small village lies north of Kathmandu Valley and is surrounded by lush green forests from either side.

Along the way to Chisapani, you’ll reach Mulkharka, a small settlement inside the Shivapuri National Park’s buffer zone. Mulkharka has had few indigenous people living since a long time. After 4 to 5 hours of walking, you’ll reach Chisapani (2165m). You may spend the night at a hotel, lodge, or homestay.

  • Maximum Elevation: 2295 meters

Heading From Chisapani Towards Kutumsang

You can start your trek early in the morning and enjoy the beautiful sunrise from Chisapani. The panoramic views of the Himalayas will stun you. You can start ascending towards Kutumsang, which can take 6-7 hours of walking. The trail takes you through small settlements and farmlands along the way. From here, you’ll start to get a glimpse of the majestic Langtang Valley.

After hours of walking, you’ll come across Pathi Bhanjyang, a small yet charming village. You can stop here to catch your breath and relax for a bit. After you’ve relaxed, make your way towards Gul Bhanjyang. To reach Gul Bhajnyang, you must cross a pass in the Langtang region. After walking for a few hours, you’ll reach Kutumsang, the next destination on the second day.

Day 2 Details:

  • Trekking Duration: 6-7 hours
  • Maximum Elevation: 2470 meters

Tharepati From Kutumsang

You’ll head north from Kutumsang on day three. You can enjoy the region’s scenery and magnificent landscape as well. You’ll ascend above on a difficult track that winds through fir and rhododendron trees in a region devoid of permanent habitation. From here, the hike continues towards Yurin Danda.

This region is famous for its breathtaking Himalayan views. After several hours of walking, you’ll reach Tharepati, the destination of the third day.

  • Maximum Elevation: 3690 meters

This trek will be interesting as it will allow trekkers to see other rural civilizations. This part of the trek is naturally gifted and is among the best regions to trek in Nepal. You’ll go east, away from the ridge lines and towards Melamchi Valley. Then, after passing through a few Sherpa communities and viewing the Himalayan ranges, we hike up to Tarke Ghyang.

This is the trek’s ultimate destination. The Hyolmo people inhabit this naturally gifted region. The trek up to this place will allow you to witness fast-flowing rivers, towering green hills, and the distant Himalayan ranges.

Day 4 Details:

  • Trekking Distance: 18 km
  • Trekking Duration: 6 hours
  • Maximum Elevation: 3690 meters

Tarke Ghyangul-Sermanthang-Kathmandu

The final day of the trek involves the least amount of walking, as you’ll be walking from Tarke Ghyangul to Sermanthang. Along the way, you’ll pass through several Buddhist communities. This scenic trek can be completed in less than four hours. It is advised to start early on day 5, as you’ll be driving from Sermanthang to Kathmandu.

Once you reach Sermanthang, you’ll take a bus to Kathmandu via Melamchi. This hike is short, and most of the last day is spent driving back to Kathmandu. You can enjoy scenic countryside views of Kathmandu, which will be the final activity for the trek.

  • Trekking Duration: 4 hours
  • Maximum Elevation: 2600 meters
