Introduction
Sundarijal is a famous tourist attraction on the outskirts of Kathmandu. It is also a starting point for many hikes in the region. The crisp, fresh air provides hikers with a refreshing atmosphere. The water around Sundarijal is a major source for Kathmandu Valley. A Hindu goddess, Sundarimai, is also worshipped here. The forest around Sundarijal lies within the Shivapuri National Park. You can also see some rare wildlife around this region. In this article, let’s explore how to travel to Sundarijal from Kathmandu.
Here are some ways you can get to Sundarijal:
- By public Vehicle: You can travel to Sundarijal by public vehicle. First, you must get to Jorpati, which you can reach from Ratnapark or Buspark. From Jorpati, you can get another bus, which will drop you off at Sundarijal. The bus fare can range between Rs 50-100 per person. However, travelers choose this option the least; most people travel by private vehicle or taxi.
- Renting a taxi: This option can be pretty expensive. Taxi fares are around Rs 1000 for one way. For the round trip, you need to pay around 2000-2500. Although this is an expensive choice, it is the most convenient way to travel to Sundarijal.
- Private Vehicle: The fastest means of transport is to have your own vehicle, like a bike or a car. It is also easier than finding a taxi or a public bus. However, you have to pay to enter the Sundarijal area, as the Nepalese army protects the region.
Hiking Route:
There are multiple hiking routes that lead you to the Sundarijal waterfall. Let’s look at them in detail:
- Sundarijal To Mulkharka: One of the most famous hiking trails in the Sundarijal region is the hike to Mulkharka village. The densely forested trail around Sundarijal is easy to walk on, with occasional views of Ganesh, Jugal, Langtang, and various other mountains. There are some steep ascents along the route, which can make this hike a bit challenging. You can refresh around waterfalls on the way to Mulkharka village. It will take you 2 hours to reach Mulkharka if you walk leisurely, enjoying the serene atmosphere. You can also visit one of the many Tamang settlements in the region. This hike is relatively shorter and easier in comparison to the other hike beginning from Budhanilkantha.
- Budhanilkantha to Sundarijal: This lengthier hike, beginning from Budhanilkantha, is also challenging. The total hiking distance is around 15 km. If you start earlier in the day, you will reach Sundarijal late in the afternoon. This long trail features waterfalls, small streams, rivers, caves, and more. Starting from Budhanilkantha, a famous Hindu temple, the trail winds through the dense forests of the Shivapuri National Park. For this hiking route, you need to be physically and mentally well-prepared. Upon reaching Sundarijal, you can enjoy the waterfall and bathe in the holy river. From Sundarijal, you can take a public bus or rent a taxi to return to Kathmandu.
You can choose either of the two routes depending on your time, itinerary, and hiking experience.
