Kathmandu’s outskirts have something to offer to every biker or traveler. Each destination offers breathtaking views, cultural insight, and natural significance. Let’s explore some of the top riding destinations close to Kathmandu.

Nagarkot (25 km)

Nagarkot is a popular tourist destination near Kathmandu. It is one of the most popular hill stations around Kathmandu. There are two to three different routes leading up to Nagarkot from Kathmandu. The ride to Nagarkot is delightful through the twisties and winding roads. This place is a favorite among bikers due to the beautiful road and being easily accessible from Kathmandu.

As you leave Kathmandu, the roads will become smoother, and you will see the beautiful scenery of the Kathmandu Valley. As you approach Nagarkot, the roads become steeper and a bit more challenging. You can find small eateries and cafes along the way where you can stop and take a break. Spring and Autumn are the best times to visit Nagarkot. You can start your ride early in the morning to avoid traffic and enjoy the crisp air around Nagarkot.

Kakani (24 km)

  • Road Condition: Mostly pitched, some gravel
  • Difficulty: Easy

Kakani, another prominent destination for bike rides and weekend getaways, is located 24 km from Kathmandu. This beautiful hill station is located at an elevation of around 2000 meters. The journey to Kakani combines a smooth ride, gentle ascents, and beautiful landscapes. The journey begins in Kathmandu, and you shall reach Balaju to begin your ride. From there, head northwest towards Trishuli Highway.

The roads get more windier as you approach Kakani. Be cautious, as there are steep ascents and sharp curves along the way to Kakani. You will see beautiful Langtang, Ganesh, and Dhaulagiri views on a clear day. Kakani is famous for trout farming, and you can enjoy the delicious delicacies around Kakani. Wear a light jacket, as it can get pretty chilly in Kakani early in the morning and late in the evening. Keep your bike in good condition, as few repair shops around Kakani exist.

With its close proximity to Kathmandu Valley, stunning mountain scenery, and beautiful roads, Kakani is a prominent destination for a bike ride from Kathmandu.

Markhu, Chitlang (35 km)

This destination has grown in popularity over the past few years. Famous due to the Indrasarovar Lake, Markhu is a quick, scenic getaway from Kathmandu. The road condition up to Markhu depends on the season. This may sound amusing, but the road condition worsens during monsoon, making rides extremely difficult and lengthy. The journey begins in Kathmandu, and you will travel to Thankot and head south towards Markhu.

The road conditions get more strenuous as you ascend. Before you reach Markhu, they get even worse, so be prepared and monitor the route beforehand. Once you reach Markhu, you can see the beautiful Indrasarobar Lake, also known as Kulekhani. It is a man-made water reservoir. There are plenty of hotels and lodges around Markhu and Kulekhani.

Various routes lead up to Markhu and Kulekhani. The most popular and easiest way is via Kalanki, Chandragiri, Markhu, and Chitlang. It is also the fastest. However, you can also travel via Pharping and Kulekhani, which is the road that eventually leads you to Hetauda. This route is a bit longer and narrower in comparison to the previous route.

Nuwakot ( 55 km)

  • Distance: 55 km on average from Kathmandu
  • Duration: 3 hours
  • Road Condition: Mostly paved roads
  • Difficulty: Easy

There are multiple destinations in Nuwakot where you can go for a ride. Some notable ones include Jhor, Lauke Waterfall, Bhalche, Bidur, etc. The new route recently opened via Tokha, which is a beautiful road. This scenic route goes through the Shivapuri National Park and eventually descends towards Thansing. Throughout the way, you will be riding beside the Likhu River. This ride is a mixture of paved and off-road.

Previously, you needed to travel via the older route, which was Naubise, Gajuri, and Nuwakot. However, most bikers prefer the newer route due to the lengthier route and bad road conditions. The beautiful landscape of Nuwakot makes it a prime destination for bike rides. There are multiple destinations in Nuwakot, which you can choose based on your preference and time. Whichever way you choose, you will enjoy the beautiful roads of Nuwakot.
