Introduction

Pokhara offers many sightseeing opportunities as the base for trekkers who make the popular Annapurna Circuit Lakeside. The town’s area is located on the shores of Phewa Lake and is full of shops and restaurants. On the south end of town, visitors can catch a boat to the historic Barahi temple, which is located on an island in the lake. On a hill overlooking the southern end of Phewa Lake, you will find the World Peace Stupa. You can see a spectacular view of the lake, of Pokhara and Annapurna Himalayas.

Moreover, hiking in Pokhara is possible all year round. The Shanti Stupa, also known as the World Peace Pagoda, is situated on a hilltop. It is known for its natural beauty and ability to inspire peace and tranquility in visitors. Located at 1100 meters, the Pokhara Shanti Stupa is Nepal’s first World Peace Pagoda. When the weather is clear, early sunrise can lead to magnificent views of the Annapurna mountain range.

Getting to the World Peace Pagoda

Here are two popular routes you can take that leads you up the World Peace Pagoda:

Hiking Through Raniban Forest (Route:1)

Start your journey from the Lakeside and follow the route to reach Damside. You will see Damside Park. From there, take the right path, split from the main road. The paved road leads you to the Phewa Lake Dam. The hiking distance is roughly 6-7kms. The trail is partially transparent, with the rest winding through dense vegetation. It is advisable to hire a local guide, due to the terrain and biodiversity of the area, for both safety and gaining insight into the local flora and fauna. After visiting the Peace Pagoda, you can hike to the bottom of Ananda Hill, which takes around 45 minutes to steep down through small villages and dense forests. From there, you can take a boat to cross the lake to reach Barahighat and visit the Talbarahi temple.

This trail is more popular among hikers and is usually preferred by many due to its pristine views and landscape.

Boating and Hike up (Route:2)

The hike to World Peace Pagoda includes two routes. To cross the lake by rowing or paddle boat, we can hire a rowing boat from Barahi Ghat, Gauri Ghat, or Hallanchowk Ghat. Although this route is shorter, it is much more strenuous due to its steep incline.  After crossing the lake, we will reach the bottom of the Peace Pagoda hill, a steep forest incline to the top that typically takes about 40 to 90 minutes to climb. There are small cafes and restaurants from which you can view the panoramic view of the Annapurna Mountain Range.

This trail is less popular due to its steep ascent and incline nature. However, this route is much shorter and will save you more time.

Returning Back

You can return via the same route you ascended. Continue hiking to the foot trail leading down to Damside through Raniban forest, which takes around 2-3 hours to reach lakeside Pokhara. The return trip is less challenging, and you can leisurely make your descent by spending more time with Mother Nature. You can also make multiple stops along your way back and enjoy the magnificent view of the Mountains and surrounding hills.
