About this activity

Shivapuri National Park, established in 2002, is located in the northern part of the Kathmandu Valley and covers a total area of 118 sq km. Rhododendrons, pine, and oaks are some of the vegetation found in this region. This region also has a variety of wildlife, including leopards, Himalayan black bears, and jungle cats

This region of the Kathmandu Valley offers some of the most beautiful views of distant mountains. Shivapuri is the second-highest hill surrounding Kathmandu after Phulchowki, Lalitpur. On a clear day, the Langtang mountain range is clearly visible from the summit of the hill.

The hike can be challenging due to its steep ascent, but there are many stairs up to the top. The hike starts in Muhanpokhari, which is near Budhanilkantha Temple

This hike is a perfect getaway for people looking to escape their busy lives and enjoy quality time outdoors.

Itinerary

We meet in Baneshwor and head towards Muhanpokhari.

This should take around 40-45 minutes.

We’ll visit Budhanilkantha temple to see the Vishnu shrine. From here, we head towards the entrance of Shivapuri National Park.

After arriving at the entrance gate, we must pay the entry fee, and from here, our hike officially starts. The trail is steep and can be challenging to some.

Ascending through the trail, we come across various bird species and can also encounter some wild animals. After 2 hours of ascending, we’ll reach the Nagi Gumba, a Buddhist monastery with a stunning 180-degree view.

After exploring the Monastery for a bit, we’ll continue our ascent towards the Shivapuri Hill. The trail is steeper and more challenging.

We shall arrive at the Shivapuri Peak after hiking for another 2 hours. From here, you’ll get a majestic view of the Valley below.

We’ll spend some time exploring the surroundings. This place offers a beautiful panoramic view of the Langtang Mountain range.

After spending some time at the top and enjoying packed meals, we will begin our descent, which is much quicker than the ascent.

We shall reach Nagi Gumba after descending for 2 hours. We can leisurely hike back, which is comparatively less challenging.

Reaching Budhanilkantha temple marks the end of our hike. We’ll spend some time here and grab a light snack.

We return back to the meeting point, which should take around 40 minutes.
