About this activity

At 2128 meters, the Nagarjun hike is one of the most popular hikes around Kathmandu. The hike starts behind the Swayambhu stupa and ends in Jamacho Gumba, the summit of the Nagarjun hill

The surroundings of this place are stunning, with green hills covering the entire region. The name Nagarjuna is dedicated to the mediator Nagarjuna. This place is known for its peace and tranquil surroundings. With growing interest from the youths, there are many people hiking to Jamacho Gumba on a regular basis.

Although the trail is relatively short compared to other hikes, it is considered tough due to its steep ascents. This place is a perfect spot for a weekend getaway, which will refresh one’s mind and soul.

Jamacho Gumba, also known as Jamacho viewpoint, has some of the best views of the distant Himalayas. There is a slim chance of us spotting a wild animal along the way, as the National Park has many species of mammals. The route is well-marked, making it easier for hikers to navigate the trail.

Itinerary

We meet at Baneshwor and head towards the Nagarjun Forest Reserve entrance near Balaju. This drive should take us 35 minutes to complete.

Our hike begins after we’ve paid the gate fees and permits. We slowly ascend towards Jamacho Peak. The trail is well-marked and surrounded by lush greenery. We may also occasionally see some wild animals.

We quickly gain altitude, starting at 1350 meters and climbing to around 2000 meters. The trail is relatively short but steep.

Around this time, we will reach the summit of Nagarjun Hill. Due to the trail’s nature, the ascent can be tiring.

We spend some peaceful time at the Jamacho Gumba and rest to gain our energy back. We’ll also enjoy some snacks enjoying the views around this place.

We begin our hike back down the same trail, which can be slippery while descending.

The walk back is comparatively much easier and we can leisurely enjoy the trail.

We will return to the trail's starting point and rest for a bit.

Return To Kathmandu: Finally, we head back to the meeting point after a tiring yet enjoyable day hike.
